Learn from my baking mishap. Go from a huge mess to a beautiful cake. |
We've all been there...that moment you enthusiastically slide your cake pans into the oven, then you realize a little too late that you've generously filled them. Panic fills your body as you start to smell something burning. You open the oven door prematurely in hopes you don't see a huge mess. Batter has started to spill over, creating a catastrophe that will tell the whole house what you did and probably the neighbors.
But don't worry. I have found myself in this exact predicament numerous times and managed to turn it around into an eye-appealing success story!!
I realized my rookie mistake before I even put those pans in the oven. Those pans were overloaded, and I knew what I had gotten myself into. But I ignored my thoughts and put them in the oven anyway. It didn't take long to start smelling weird things. I had been in this position before and knew exactly what I was going to see when I opened that oven. Sure enough it was a mess.
My kitchen instincts kicked in, and I had to move quickly. Without hesitation, I grabbed a piece of foil the length of the oven and placed it on the bottom rack just under the pans, doing my best to create a protective barrier that would stop the overflow from hitting that bright red burner in the bottom of the oven.
Already, the cakes were far from unscathed. After they finished baking and cooling, I did my best to keep them intact when I took them out of the pans. Thank goodness I had greased and floured those pans well. Needless to say this was not my first kitchen blunder and I have some steps that I never miss. Those bad boys still needed a serious intervention, and that's where the real hero stepped in: Frosting.
A few valuable lessons have now been learned from the umpteenth time of making this baking mistake:
- Moderation is key: Don't overfill your cake pans. Do not fill them over 2/3 full to avoid potential disasters. Depending on the batter, aim for half full pans.
- Precaution pays off: Before placing over filled pans in the oven, set them on cookie sheets covered with foil. This simple trick can save you from an unwanted major oven-cleaning ordeal. Even if your pans aren't overfilled and can give you some peace of mind.
- Act quickly: If you do encounter spills or burnt batter, take the time to scrape it out of the oven ASAP. It might be a dreaded chore, but a clean oven ensures better baking in the future and can prevent a burnt smell and a smoke alarm screaming at you.
Until the next baking adventure...
